Changes are coming to both the blue and green can services. The changes were approved in the July 17, 2025, City Council meeting.

Green Can program to be discontinued

The curbside green waste collection program will officially end on October 10, 2025.

What does this mean for me?

Residents who currently have a green can will keep it until October at the current rate of $4.13/month unless they choose to cancel their green can service prior to then. Beginning October 10, 2025, all remaining green waste cans will be reclassified as an additional black garbage can and will be billed a monthly rate of $8.16, which is the current rate for an additional black garbage can. Green waste will no longer be collected separately going forward.

What do I do with my green waste now?

We encourage residents to continue using the compost drop-off site, which will remain open and available at no charge for Brigham City residents. This is a great way to responsibly dispose of green waste.

How do I cancel my green can?

If you would like to opt out of the green can service, please use this form to cancel your service and arrange pickup of your green can. Alternatively, you may contact Brigham City Utilities by phone at 435-734-6601. You must cancel your service by October 1, 2025, to avoid being charged for an additional black can.

When you enrolled in the green can program, you agreed to a minimum commitment of 12 months of service. However, due to this program change, we are allowing residents to cancel their green cans even if they have not yet completed the 12-month commitment.

Why is Brigham City discontinuing the curbside green waste program?

The cost of operating the program has become unsustainable. Each week during the collection period, Brigham City dedicates a truck and driver exclusively to green waste collection. However, a large portion of the material collected is contaminated with non-compostable items, which means it cannot be used in our composting process. As a result, we are often forced to transport this material to the landfill, incurring additional expenses for extra trips and tipping fees.

Rate for blue can recycling program to increase

Brigham City's curbside recycling pickup service is provided by EconoWaste, and the funds collected for the blue cans are passed directly to them. In the past couple of years, Brigham City has been subsidizing the cost of the blue cans, making an increase necessary to cover the difference between the current customer rate and the actual service cost.

What does this mean for me?

If you have a blue recycling can, the new monthly rate of $10.00 takes effect with the August 2025 billing cycle.

What if I don't want a blue can anymore?

When you signed up for the recycling service, you agreed to a 12-month minimum commitment. However, due to this rate change, we are allowing participants to opt out of the program even if they have not yet fulfilled the 12-month term.

If you would like to discontinue your blue can service, please contact Brigham City Utilities at 435-734-6601.
